In Memory of AB

John Miers

Reserved

It was not uncommon for well-to-do Georgian gentlemen to allocate a sum of money in their will for the purchase of mourning attire and rings for close friends and family. Typically these rings would be gold and black enamel bands embossed with the deceased’s name in gold lettering but silhouette rings offered a more personalised choice, the plain black profile feeling appropriate to the occasion.

This very wearable silhouette ring comes from a private collection of long-standing. Dating to the 1790s, it depicts an older gentleman with loose natural hair curling on the nape of his neck. The profile is signed Miers under the bust-line and is set under crystal in an oval gold ring that is engraved on the underside with the gentleman’s initials AB.

Accompanied by the 1947 receipt for this ring.
