The Black Dress

Circa 1850

Shown in profile and smiling serenely, this young lady wears a flattering black dress trimmed with lace cuffs and fastened at the neck with patterned ribbon. The dress may indicate that she is in mourning, perhaps for a parent. Standing in a landscape, she holds a posy of flowers.

Painted in watercolour, the portrait is presented in the original rosewood frame with a gilt slip. The background card has the minimal age-darkening as to be expected; the period frame has a small area of filler restoration to the bottom right edge but is otherwise in fine condition.
