The Meringue Hat

Emilie Millicent Buckingham

Sold

This characterful portrait shows a lady named Emilie Millicent Buckingham wearing a layered lace handkerchief fill-in over a charcoal dress, and a ribbon choker tied at the back as was fashionable during the 1780s. It is though her wonderfully fussy hat that most draws the eye especially as it is worn over a white lace indoor cap with side lappets. Why wear one hat when you can wear two?

Watercolour profile on card housed a traditional papier-mâché frame with convex glass and a floral hanger.
