Swaggering

French School, circa 1780

£2,500

Posing in his parkland, this ‘swagger’ portrait shows a sauve gentleman in a powdered wig and lavish purple coat with gold stripes, the deep cuff on his sleeve decorated with a large silver button. His ivory waistcoat is richly embroidered with gold thread and his frilled chemise is adorned with a gold pin with his initial – R. To complete his self-confident pose, he holds a swagger stick.

The portrait is set in the original gold frame with a twinkly paste border. It lacks a hanging ring though there is a mark on the reverse to suggest that it did once have a ring. Currently it resides within a folding leather case to prevent any fading of the colours.
