Anne Marie Belle

Sold

Anne-Marie Belle (née Chéron) was one of three miniature painters known to have worked at the exiled Jacobite court at St Germain. Born in Paris in 1649, Anne-Marie married the portrait artist Alexis-Simon Belle in 1701. This gave her an entrée into court circles as Belle had been appointed Painter in Ordinary to the King of England. Their portraits of the Old Pretender and his entourage were often smuggled back to England. Anne-Marie died in 1718 at the age of 69.

Watercolour on vellum.
