Rev. Watkins

Circa 1820

Sold

This unusual silhouette is reverse painted on convex glass backed with card and shows the Rev. Watkins relaxing with a book. Painted mostly in black, transparency has been used for the book, the bands and in the hair whilst fingerprinting has added texture to the coat with some scratching out on the collar.

The silhouette is unsigned and is housed in the original papier-mâché frame with a star hanger. The sitter’s name is recorded on an old label on the reverse.
