Mr Nichol

of The Cornish

Sold

Painted on card with his face in black and the uniform in colour, this officer is named on the reverse as Mr Nichol of The Cornish. He wears a red coat faced with navy, a cross belt decorated with a regimental red star badge, and a fantail hat with a feather plume.

Although inscribed reverse as being by Buncombe or Dillon and dating to the late 18th century, no firm attribution has been possible. The silhouette has a little rubbing to the epaulette but is otherwise good. It is housed in a period ebonised frame with a crenellated gilt inner border, a style of frame also used by Mrs Harrington at that time. The frame has a scattering of old worm holes.
