Perfectly Bronzed

John Field

£380

Although signed Miers under the bust-line, this profile of an immaculately dressed gentleman was actually painted and finely bronzed by Miers’ partner John Field. The two men worked together harmoniously from a studio on the Strand, Miers creating exquisite plain black profiles and Field specialising in more decorative gilded work.

The young gentleman wearing a double-breasted coat and a frilled chemise has rumpled curls and side whiskers in a fashion that dates the silhouette to 1810.  It is set in a gold-plated locket frame that reveals on the reverse a lock of brown hair with gold wire and seed pearls laid on opalescent glass (some breakages and movement to the gold wire).
