Georgian Siblings
Circa 1780
£365
This delightful pair of small watercolour portraits features siblings in a landscape setting with trees, hills, a lake with an arched bridge, and a thatched farmhouse. The youngest child wears a low-cut dress in a style that was worn by both young boys and girls during the 18th century. The eldest wears a black skeleton suit over a shirt with a wide frill-edged collar, a style that remained popular over many decades for young boys that had been breeched.
Watercolour on card with some fading to the flesh tones housed in the original period giltwood frames with an inner beaded border. Both frames have rubbing to the gilding that lends a wonderful patina; one frame has some old loss to the beaded border. So nice to find these as a matched pair.
