A Stitch in Time

Henry Winslow

£150

This fluid pencil drawing shows an elderly lady in profile seated in an armchair concentrating on her sewing work. It shows the influence of the artist’s teacher, James MacNeill Whistler. The portrait is professionally mounted and presented in a narrow ebonised frame and is accompanied by the 1975 brochure from the Gerald M. Norman Gallery where this drawing was exhibited.

The son of an architect, Henry Winslow was born in 1874 and educated in Boston, Massachusetts. He then attended École des Beaux-Arts but it was his time spent at Whistler’s School in Paris that most influenced his style of drawing. Winslow first exhibited at the Paris Salon before settling in London around 1901 where he exhibited at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society (1937) and Kensington Art Gallery (1949). He published a book of etchings and a volume of poems. Winslow’s death is variously recorded as 1953, 1955 or 1960. Examples of his artwork can be found at the British Museum.
