Man About Town

Beau Brummell was the arbiter of men’s fashion in Regency England. He established a trend for wearing fitted, beautifully cut clothes and claimed to take five hours to dress. He even recommended that boots be polished with champagne. His style of dress became known as dandyism.

This whimsical watercolour portrait shows a gentleman with top hat and cane in his blue coat, breeches and boots who would certainly qualify as a dandy.

Painted on paper laid on blue backing paper, the portrait is housed in a traditional papier-mâché frame with an emblems (rose, thistle and shamrock) hanger.
