Frill Pin
John Miers
£240
These tiny silhouette pins became known as frill pins as they could be worn discreetly by a gentleman on his shirt frill or, as would have been the case with this example, by a lady on the lace bodice of her dress. Painted around 1800, the plain black silhouette shows a gentleman wearing a frilled chemise.
This tiny ‘shade’ is typical of the work of Miers who preferred the simplicity and grace of an unembellished black profile. Painted on ivory and signed under the bust-line, the silhouette is set in a gold-plated brooch frame, the reverse with a glazed aperture filled with neatly plaited brown hair.
