The Country Gent

Thomas Day 1780s

Sold

Signed portraits by Thomas Day are rarely seen and indeed few facts are known about the artist who is believed to have hailed from Devonshire. During the 1770s he trained under Ozias Humphry whose influence can be seen in the fine draughtsmanship of this portrait of a wispy-haired elderly gentleman. Particular attention has been paid to his facial details – wrinkles to the forehead, hooded eyes and crows feet – making it an expressive character study.

The portrait is signed with cursive initials TD and dated 178-, the final digit being obscured by the frame. It is set in the original gold bracelet style frame with decorative edging.
