Pimply Youth

Circa 1800

Sold

This well-drafted plumbago portrait shows a youth attired in a coat with generous lapels over a waistcoat with a standing collar and a deep stock in a style that was promoted in Regency England by the infamous Beau Brummell. His hair falls over his shoulders in loose curls. Despite the artist’s limited palette, this is still a colourful portrait in the sense that much attention has been paid to capturing the small details from the creases on the coat to the pimples on the young man’s face.

Drawn on vellum and in fine condition, the portrait is housed in a rose gilt frame that is enclosed on the back.
