Item Ref. 3737

ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1830

This is a charming double portrait in watercolour and pencil of a mother (or grandmother perhaps) seated by her young child/grandchild. The lady has dressed for the occasion in all her finery including fine black lace mittens. Her pink dress has a pleated bodice, a narrow belted waist and distinctive demi-gigot sleeves. Her hair is arranged in rolled curls under her voluminous cap and round her shoulders she has a lace-trimmed shawl. But it is her jewellery which is the most eye-catching feature as, in addition to a gold brooch on her corsage, she has what appears to be portrait miniatures or cameos on her belt buckle and on black velvet bands worn over both cuffs.

The child, probably a little boy, has blonde curls and is wearing a blue wide-shouldered dress with a black waist sash. he is holding a toy whip and hoop.

The watercolour has been laid on card and has a couple of closed tears, one on the right edge running into the shawl, the other barely noticeable in the top corner. There are also some light creases, the most visible of which is at the top in the unpainted area. There is also a single spot on the lady's lap and some very light age-browning. The painting is housed in a handsome bird's eye maple veneer frame with a replacement gilt slip.

Framed size: 123/8 x 10" (305 x 254mm)

Item Ref. 2197

ENGLISH SCHOOL, early 19th century

This is a charming watercolour painting of a little cherub resting on a cloud. He even has gossamer wings which are just about visible. During the 19th century drawing was considered a 'polite recreation' for young ladies, and its accomplishment was a sign of gentility. The inspiration for their artistic endeavours often came from old master paintings and prints.

The watercolour is housed in a period bird's eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip.

Framed size: 12 x 10" (305 x 207mm)

Price: £165

Profile portrait of a country gentleman

Item Ref. 3391

ENGLISH NAIVE SCHOOL, circa 1820-1830

Here is a full-length profile portrait of an elderly gentleman standing in an elegant room furnished with a colourful patterned carpet and with paintings displayed the panelled walls. Holding a cane, the gentleman is attired in a dark double-breasted tail-coat, a red cravat, brown breeches buttoned at the knee, and matching spatterdashes which were the mark of an English country gentleman fond of outdoor pursuits. Sadly, we no longer know his name.

Pencil and watercolour on card residing in the original rosewood veneer frame with gilt slip. The painting has slight age-browning and there are small losses to the gilt slip but a very honest and evocative period piece nonetheless.

Framed size: 115/8 x 93/4" (297 x 247mm)

Price: £255
