Young Gardeners

Circa 1830

Sold

This delightful silhouette features three children aspiring to be gardeners. The two younger children have some flowers in a little wicker cart to which they are adding some soil and are being cheered on my their older flag-waving sibling.

Cut and lightly bronzed with a grey watercolour wash background of flower beds, hills and trees. The silhouette is unsigned but may have been taken by the Hubard Gallery which was very active during this period as it toured the British Isles.

The silhouette has light age browning to the background card. It is set in the original bird’s eye maple frame with a tarnished gilt slip. The frame has a small area of loss to the veener on the top edge and some touched-up losses to the gilding on the slip.
