Willamina Brown

Circa 1790

Sold

Most ladies donned their Sunday best to sit for a portrait and Willamina is no exception though her outfit is somewhat quirky! Her cornflower blue dress is worn with a bulky handkerchief fill-in fastened in a bow under her chin. She has gold earrings and her auburn curls are topped with a striking turban style hat that would make her stand out in a crowd!

Painted in watercolour on card, the portrait is set in the original papier-mâché frame with convex glass and a leaf hanger. The backing board is inscribed with her name – Willamina Brown (possibly née Childen). The portrait has some age-darkening but is in very good condition as is the frame.
