A handsome portrait of a well-dressed gentleman in a tail-coat with a velvet collar wearing a pinkie ring and a carnation buttonhole.

Not signed but by the unmistakable hand of Francois Theodore Rochard (1798-1858). Born in Paris, he was the younger brother of S. J. Rochard, also a portrait artist. He studied art in Paris before following his brother to London where he became a fashionable portrait painter in watercolours and miniature patronised by a distinguished clientele including royalty. He exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1855.

Unframed watercolour on paper (possibly trimmed down as bottom corners slightly canted) and laid on board. Fine condition.
