The Orange Wrap

Circa 1820

Sold

The bright colours used in this portrait, from the pretty blue ribbon trims on her dress that match her eyes to the red beads and her orange wrap, are very eye-catching. Dating to around 1820, the portrait is presented behind convex glass in a traditional papier-mâché frame with a decorative surround and a bunch of grapes hanger.

The lady’s name is unknown though the frame is backed with a cut-down contemporary calling card with two hand-written names so she may well be (or be related to) Mrs Jessopp or Mrs O’Brien.
