The Fringed Shawl

Circa 1840

Sold

Seated on a terrace with a view of the hills, this pensive young lady is wearing a white dress with a narrow pointed waistline and layers of deep frills on the neckline and sleeves, a brooch on her corsage. Over her arms she has a brightly coloured fringed shawl. It’s unclear what she’s holding in her lap but suggestions are welcome!

Painted in watercolour with pencil, the portrait is presented in a handsome bird’s eye maple frame with a gilt slip. The frame has some old losses to the veneer on the corners and on the bottom edge just beneath the slip. It has been cut down from a larger frame at some point so it also shows slight gapping to the joints.
