Pencil, pen and ink sketch on laid paper of an old lady in a straw hat seated with a basket sorting her flowers (or vegetables). Signed with a monogram bottom left and dated, 1786.

John Nixon (1755-1818) was a wealthy merchant who enjoyed capturing likenesses of the characters he encountered on his travels.

Unframed, the drawing is professionally mounted with a watercolour wash border. It is in fine condition with very light age-browning.
