The Female Haymaker

Circa 1800

Sold

This charming rustic scene of a young haymaker pausing in her work for a romantic tête-à-tête with her swain has been reverse painted on convex glass. A fine verre églomisé border has then been added with gold stars within navy blue and pale pink crescents to beautiful effect. The outer border has then been painted in sky blue.

The painting is set in the original butterscotch alabaster frame native to Derbyshire where such pieces were created in small workshops to sell to the many tourists passing through the spa town of Buxton to partake of its natural spring waters.

The painting has very small losses to the decorative border though these are only visible under magnification. The painting itself and the frame are in fine condition.
