The Artist’s Cap

Sepia Memorial Reverse

Sold

This gentleman is wearing a brown coat and matching waistcoat with a soft cap in a style that was much favoured during the late 18th / early 19th century by artists and sometimes by writers. The initials J B (possibly I B) on the reverse are the only clue to his identity.

The reverse side shows a wonderful sepia memorial painting of a young lady in a bonnet and dainty shoes visiting the artist’s tomb overshadowed by the traditional weeping willow and cypress trees to symbolise sorrow and mourning.

Both paintings are in fine condition with just a little dust visible under the front glass. The portrait is set in a narrow gold frame with an attractive beaded border and bail.
