Striking portrait of a lady seated reading at a table in all her frills and flounces and with fresh flowers on her hat. Watercolour with pencil on paper laid on board. Signed bottom right W Moore / 1832.

William Moore settled in York where he was a successful portrait artist working in oil, watercolours and pastel. He married twice and had one daughter and thirteen sons, several of whom were also successful artists. He died in 1851 of lead and vermilion poisoning contracted from the pastel pigment.
