Squinting

Circa 1810

Sold

This well-dressed gentleman is striking not just for his gingery side-whiskers and his rumpled hairdo, a style that was popularly known as à la Titus, but also for the unmistakable squint in his eye. He’s also a little portly with plump lips and a well-filled face!

Although his details may be hidden within the frame, he is for now only known by his initials that are picked out in seed pearls on the reverse of the gold frame. Several shades of hair – his, his wife’s and his children’s – are romantically intermingled in curls with seed pearls and gold wire and laid on foiled opalescent glass.
