Skipton Bridge

21 May 1839

Sold

This delightful painting is like a snapshot of genteel country life capturing as it does a moment in time on the 21st May 1839. A three-storey house with a pedimented front door, Skipton Bridge was modest by Georgian country house standards. In the foreground can be seen two ladies in bonnets and shawls, one holding a rake as if she has been interrupted whilst gardening, and the other a basket so she may be a pedlar hoping to sell her wares.

Entitled Skipton Bridge and signed bottom right with the initials J.H. and the date, the watercolour is presented in a handsome rosewood frame with a gilt slip.
