Siblings in a Garden

Mrs James Fairfield, 1851

Double portraits of siblings are always special. This charming pair of children are depicted in a garden landscape with an overhanging tree and a hint of water in the background. The eldest child – a boy perhaps – is dressed in blue whilst the younger child – a girl perhaps –  is wearing white and is holding a drooping rosebud.

The portrait is understood to signed on the reverse – ‘Mrs Jas. Fairfield / Sep 1851’. It is set in a pinchbeck frame with pierced scrolls decoratively engraved with flowers and leaves. The reverse has a brooch pin attachment and is also glazed to show sprays of hair with gold wire and seed pearls on opalescent glass. Both the miniature and the frame are in fine condition.

Mrs James Fairfield does not appear to recorded as a miniature painter though she clearly had talent.
