Samuel Houghton Silhouette

Dated 1786

Signed jewellery pieces by Scottish silhouette artist Samuel Houghton are rarely seen. This example is painted on ivory and shows a young lady wearing a dress with a frilled neckline, her hair worn in a fringe with long curls falling over her shoulder.

The silhouette is painted on ivory and is signed beneath the bust-line – S. Houghton 86. It is presented in what appears to be the original burnished steel setting with a later brooch clasp fitting.

Working in Edinburgh, Samuel Houghton (d.1796) was a contemporary of John Miers though his career was relatively short-lived. He also painted profiles on plaster but it is his early jewellery pieces that are particularly difficult to find.
