Scottish Profile in Steel

Samuel Houghton, 1786

£400

Signed jewellery pieces by the Scottish silhouette artist Samuel Houghton are few and far between not least because Houghton’s career was cut short by his premature death in 1796.

This young lady with her long flowing curls with a fringe is wearing a dress with a frilled neckline. The profile is  signed under the bustline – S. Houghton 86. It is presented in the original burnished steel setting with a later brooch clasp fitting.

Houghton worked in Edinburgh and was a contemporary of John Miers.
