R Milnes MP

John Nixon, 1786


Pen & ink sketch of Richard Slater Milnes (1759-1804), MP for York between 1784 and 1790. Milnes was a wealthy man and resided with his large family at Fryston Hall. During his tenure at Parliament he supported the abolitionist cause. The drawing is inscribed with the sitter’s name on the reverse and also entitled on the album page to which it remains partially affixed. Some browning and a curious scorch mark to the edge of the sheet.

John Nixon (1755-1818) was a wealthy merchant who enjoyed capturing likenesses of the characters he encountered on his travels.
