Princess Curls

Circa 1850

Before the days of curling tongs, ladies created their ringlets (or princess curls) by laboriously wrapping strands of hair in rags and sleeping in them overnight, a technique that this hazel-eyed young lady has clearly perfected. She wears a white frill-edged dress with a pink rose on her corsage that reflects the blush on her cheeks.

The portrait is housed in a later decorative gilt metal frame backed with card.
