Pretty in Blue

Circa 1850

SOLD

A watercolour portrait of a young girl holding a posy of summer flowers. She is wearing a pretty blue dress edged with white lace and with buttons and braiding running down the front. Her outfit is completed with a twisted coral bead necklace that will have been gifted to her in the belief that wearing it would keep her safe and ward off any evil spirits.

The painting is watercolur with body colour painted on card. It is unsigned and is presented in a period bird’s eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip and old glass. There is some scattered spotting to the bottom third of the background but this cannot distract from an otherwise delightful portrait.
