Powdered and Coiffured!

Circa 1780

During the mid- to late-1770s, huge hair decorated with feathers and ornaments was all the rage on both sides of the Channel but the impracticalities of these styles forced the height of the hair to diminish during the 1780s as worn by this graceful lady. Her hair is powdered and false hair will have still been added with soft rolled curls falling over her shoulders.

She is wearing a mauve décolleté dress with narrow sleeves, a fine white fichu draped over her shoulders to protect her modesty.

The portrait is set in the original gold bracelet frame with a hanging ring. Excellent condition.
