The portrait is signed on the left ‘MJT 1838’ for Mary Jane Tomalin. It is housed with convex glass in a gilt metal frame backed with velvet.

Little is known about Mary Jane Tomalin who exhibited miniatures at the Royal Academy between 1838 and 1859 from an address in Pentonville, London.
