Expecting . . .

Circa 1790

Sold

Pregnancy is rarely portrayed in historical portraits and virtually unknown in miniature paintings, making this a curious and engaging portrait. With a light bloom to her cheeks, the unnamed young lady is wearing a cross-over gown with a high waistline, her dark hair falling in natural curls over her shoulder.

The portrait is set in the original gold frame that is glazed on the reverse to show thickly plaited brown hair.
