In Her Riding Habit

Circa 1760

SOLD

Given that this little portrait is painted en grisaille, it is remarkably detailed. It shows a stylishly dressed lady in profile wearing a fitted coat, a riding habit perhaps, with tasselled buttons and tied at the front with a bow. Her high hair style comprises stiff shoulder-length curls with a banging chignon and is topped with an elaborately decorated hat.

Painted in watercolour on vellum using the techniques of stippling and scratching out. It is displayed in a simple gilt metal mount.
