Edward & Alice

Thomas Hazlehurst

Sold

To find a pair of portraits that have stayed together through several generations is always pleasing but even more so when, as with this pair, their names are also known. Grey-haired Edward Green (1764-1844) is shown wearing a tan coat and cream waistcoat whilst his wife Alice (née Unsworth) is shown in a blue dress with a white lace fill-in with a ruff collar, and a matching lace cap.

Both portraits are signed T. H on the obverse and are set in later rose gilt frames.

Having studied under Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Hazlehurst lived and worked in the Liverpool area. He and his wife had thirteen children; his eldest son also became a miniature painter though he died tragically at a young age.
