Checked Trews

Circa 1820

Books were a commonly used prop for silhouette artists to denote a sitter with a studious and learned disposition, as seen in this profile of George John Gates. George is well turned out in his tail-coat, checked trousers and black stock.

The silhouette is painted with gilding used for the hair and the book. It is housed in the original bird’s eye maple veneer frame with a glit slip.
