Battledore & Shuttlecock

Circa 1840

An unusual silhouette of two girls playing battledore and shuttlecock, an early form of badminton. The girls are wearing matching dresses with Donna Maria sleeves over pantaloons, their hair braided down their back with small braided loops framing their face.

The silhouette is cut and gilded with a watercolour wash base. It is presented in a handsome flat profile tiger maple veneer frame with a gilt slip. The silhouette has light age darkening as to be expected; there are also some light surface scratches and dings to the background card but nothing serious enough to distract from the overall charm of the piece.
