Aristocratic Airs
Edward Robertson, 1833
£1,800
Set against a smoldering blue background and wearing a black coat with a velvet shawl collar over a white waistcoat and black stock, this gentleman with his dark curls and well-groomed moustache looks very aristocratic.
The portrait is signed along the outer edge E R 1833. It is set with a gilt metal mount within the original velvet-lined travelling case. The portrait is in fine condition with strong original colours; the case has some scuffing to the outside front cover but no more than would be expected.
Born in 1809, Edward grew up to follow in his father Andrew Robertson’s footsteps by becoming a miniaturist. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1827 and exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1826 and at Royal Academy between 1830 and 1837. Works by him are not often seen.
