A Cherished Doll
Fanny Arlaud, 1820s
As she poses for her portrait, this charming little girl clutches her favourite doll and its tiny straw bonnet with red ribbon ties. With her blonde hair arranged in ringlets, she wears a cornflower blue dress trimmed on the wide neckline with white lace.
Painted by Fanny Arlaud, the portrait is set in a gilt-metal mount backed with card. There are a couple of small blemishes to the painted background area but otherwise the portrait is in good condition.
Born in Geneva in 1802, Françoise Jacqueline Louise (Fanny) Arlaud was the niece of an established miniaturist. She exhibited in Switzerland between 1822 and 1832 the year of her marriage.
