A Basket of Fruit

Early 19th Century

Sold

Charmingly naïve in style, this portrait shows two children sharing a basket of fruit. The little boy is wearing a ‘skeleton suit’ of matching jacket and breeches with three vertical rows of buttons and a ruff collar. The little girl is wearing a simple muslin dress with a matching frilly cap trimmed with a bow as well as a coral necklace to keep her safe from any bad spirits.

The portrait is set in a daguerreotype frame with a narrow decorative gilt metal surround.

The portrait has a small chip to the top left corner which is just about concealed by the frame. There are also a couple of spots in the blue sky area but none of this detracts from the overall charm of the piece. The case has light wear to the edges and reverse side as would be expected.
