Item Ref. 3413

HUSTON, circa 1840

This is a full-length portrait of a lady standing in a garden landscape, a wilting white rose in her hand. She is wearing a black dress, the style typical of the early Victorian era with its wide skirt, narrow waist and white lace undersleeves. The neckline is decorated with a blue and white ribbon secured by a small gold brooch. One ever so tiny foot can be seen peeping out from under her dress.

Watercolour on card with gum arabic highlights, signed HUSTON/ 44 St Paul's Street. A date following the artist's name has been obscured possibly out of vanity by the sitter not wishing her friends to deduce her true age. It is housed in the original maple veneer frame with gilt slip.

Framed size: 111/2 x 93/4" (293 x 250mm)

Profile portrait of a country gentleman

Item Ref. 3391

ENGLISH NAIVE SCHOOL, circa 1820-1830

Here is a full-length profile portrait of an elderly gentleman standing in an elegant room furnished with a colourful patterned carpet and with paintings displayed the panelled walls. Holding a cane, the gentleman is attired in a dark double-breasted tail-coat, a red cravat, brown breeches buttoned at the knee, and matching spatterdashes which were the mark of an English country gentleman fond of outdoor pursuits. Sadly, we no longer know his name.

Pencil and watercolour on card residing in the original rosewood veneer frame with gilt slip. The painting has slight age-browning and there are small losses to the gilt slip but a very honest and evocative period piece nonetheless.

Framed size: 115/8 x 93/4" (297 x 247mm)

Price: £255

Item Ref. 3392

ANGLO-INDIAN SCHOOL, 1848

This piece is a personal favourite as it comes with a well-documented and colourful history. The subject of the painting is a chestnut brown horse called Jack who is depicted majestically standing in his stable. Jack belonged to Lieutenant John George Henry Philipps of the 41st Madras Native Infantry who has recorded Jack's achievements on the backing board of the painting:

- The first horse I bought in India when I landed at Madras in May 1848;
- A horse I killed a great many Pig off;
- won once at Trichinopoly November 1849 ...;
- was second to Mr Crossland’s Emile beating seven others;
- 1850 won a sweepstake beating four others;
- 1851 won once ...;
- 1852 was beaten in a match at Kamptec ...

Unsigned watercolour on paper set in a really handsome bird's eye maple veneer frame with gilt slip.

Framed size: 111/4 x 135/8" (285 x 345mm)

Watercolour portrait of a child

Naive portrait of a childNaive portrait of a child

Item Ref. 2587

ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1840-50

A charming portrait of a fair-haired child in a blue dress with buttons down the front and tied at the waist with a broad red sash. The square-toed shoes are fastened across the front. A large straw hat decorated with an ostrich plume lies on the ground. The child is shown standing in a landscape and is holding a bunch of green grapes. There appears to be an unfinished pencil sketch in the bottom corner that suggests the artist originally planned to add a toy horse.

Watercolour over pencil housed in the original stained pine frame.

To view: 5¾ x 5½" (145 x 148mm)
Framed size: 95/8 x 93/8" (245 x 240mm)

P. SKEOLAN, 1850

A small watercolour portrait of a sweet little girl, her hair in ringlets, wearing a pink dress with a pinched waist and a flounced skirt over white drawers edged with lace. She stands in an outdoor landscape with trees and is holding a hoop and whip.

Signed 'P. Skeolan/ 1850' and housed in a decorative giltwood frame.

P. Skeolan is listed in British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860 as an itinerant silhouettist who worked in the north of England. But in addition to cutting silhouettes, he was clearly a talented portrait artist.

Item Ref. 2197

ENGLISH SCHOOL, early 19th century

This is a charming watercolour painting of a little cherub resting on a cloud. He even has gossamer wings which are just about visible. During the 19th century drawing was considered a 'polite recreation' for young ladies, and its accomplishment was a sign of gentility. The inspiration for their artistic endeavours often came from old master paintings and prints.

The watercolour is housed in a period bird's eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip.

Framed size: 12 x 10" (305 x 207mm)

Price: £165

Folky portrait of a young man

Folky portrait of a young man

Item Ref. 3416

ENGLISH NAIVE SCHOOL, circa 1820

Here is a quirky full-length portrait of a young 'swell' posing, hand on hip, in his Sunday best clothes. Holding his top hat, he is wearing a yellow waistcoat, brown trousers, a jaunty red cravat and a black tail-coat with sleeves that extend down over his hands. The unknown artist was probably an itinerant painter more accustomed to painting signboards for inns but what the portrait may lack in finesse it makes up for in charm!

Watercolour and crayons on paper and over-coated with varnish. The varnish has yellowed with age and has caused the paper to cockle though this is not as obvious as the unframed image would suggest. There is also a small (about 10mm) closed edge tear (top right). The portrait is still held in the original country-style painted frame with old wobbly glass.

Framed size: 11 x 9" (280 x 228mm)

Item Ref. 2456

ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1845

A watercolour profile portrait of a lady standing in an outdoor landscape with hills and trees with a man in a frock-coat and top hat in the background behind the fence. The lady is wearing an ochre-coloured dress with a pointed bodice, a full flounced skirt, and bell-shaped sleeves with half-sleeves underneath. Her hair is draped over her ears and drawn back into a plaited knot.

The paper has age-browning especially in the unpainted sky area but because the painting is in sepia tones this does not detract from it. There is also a small hole in the grass area but a piece of old paper inserted behind makes it less noticeable. The watercolour is housed in the original dark wood frame with gilt slip (distressed) and old bubbled glass.
